Join us for the Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center’s Light of Liberty Awards Reception to celebrate the incredible community members working to ensure access to justice for immigrants throughout the state.

Come for networking, a chance to hear from Keynote Cepeda-Freytiz, and to celebrate the power of our communities.

Keynote Speaker

Representative Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz

Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz is the PA State Representative for the 129th legislative district.  She is a wife and mother of two college students. She was born in New York City and obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz College, where she majored in French and minored in Spanish. She also holds a Master of Science Degree in Education from Long Island University.

Shortly after graduating college Johanny began her 20+ year journey as a public servant and community leader. For over a decade she served as college counselor at Marta Valle Secondary School while also working as the Program Director for non-profit organization Grand St. Settlement, where she (among other things) mobilized youth to register over 5,000 voters during the 2000 presidential elections.

In 2007, Johanny took a leap of faith and moved to Reading, Pennsylvania where she opened Mi Casa Su Casa Café in the downtown section of the city. Almost immediately, the cafe became a hub for community engagement and grassroots organizing. In 2009, she graduated from the Kutztown University Small Business Development Center, while continuing to not only engage the community, but also listen to that same community. This is what ushered Johanny into local politics.

In November of 2019, Johanny was elected as the first Dominican woman to ever be appointed to Reading, Pennsylvania’s City Council and in 2022 was appointed to President of City Council becoming the first woman to serve in that role.

Johanny is the recipient of the James Hyson Entrepreneur Award presented by Community First Fund, the Business Person of the Year Award by the Latino Chamber of Commerce, and she is also the recipient of the Take the Lead 2017 Award presented by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania.
